Last pitch made for Silver Creek capital project

HANOVER — Silver Creek Central School business administrator Lisa Rohloff had one more stop to make in trying to garner support for the district’s capital project.

On Monday night, Rohloff went before the Hanover Town Board to present Silver Creek’s proposal to renovate its track and other fixtures around the school, and was met with support. She emphasized the point that usage of the track extends beyond just school purposes.

“We recognize it’s not just something utilized by our staff and students,” Rohloff said. “It’s definitely something used by the community.”

The track has been deteriorating quicker than the school can keep up with, and was not on the budget for the last capital project done by the school, because in order for the track to receive state aid, it had to be 15 years old, which it is now. Now, the school will receive 95% state aid back on the project, and will be fully funded by the capital reserve, meaning there is no tax impact at all, though voter approval is needed to spend that money.

Rohloff’s visit to the board is especially timely, as the vote for the budget approval occurs today. Silver Creek residents over the age of 18 wishing to vote can go to the Silver Creek High School library from 1-9 p.m. to cast their ballot for the project. Residents who received an absentee ballot for the vote must have them returned by 5 p.m. today.

The vote also includes replacing a freight elevator, original to the district in 1958, and installing eye wash stations and other safety amenities.

There are no voting restrictions in place due to COVID-19, as mask wearing on Silver Creek’s campus is optional.
