Fredonia pot panel filling up

Jon Espersen

Fredonia Trustee Jon Espersen offered an update on the village cannabis committee at last week’s Board of Trustees meeting.

“I was given names that had expressed an interest in participating. I contacted everyone over the last couple days to get their days and times that they can be free to meet,” he said. “There’s currently seven or eight of us and we’re picking a date, probably next Tuesday, for our first actual meeting.”

Mayor Douglas Essek asked him if there were any points he wanted to address from the start.

“The communication that I have received up until now from the community has been fairly negative regarding the cannabis situation,” Espersen responded. “I’ve tried to explain, to people that are actually willing have a discussion with me, that it was the previous board that decided to opt in, and it was our job, if the state is going to allow a dispensary in the village if Fredonia, to make it as safe as possible, and to take the responsibility to implement it as safely as we can do it.”

Espersen asked Police Chief David Price if he could find someone from his department to be on the committee. Price volunteered to do it himself.

The Board of Trustees will get regular updates about cannabis committee business, Espersen promised.
