SHERIDAN — Town officials announced this week that they will be holding a public hearing at their next meeting to discuss passing a local law that would place a nine-month moratorium on short-term rental properties.

The potential moratorium will be put in place to give the town a chance to discuss how they would like to move forward with short-term rentals, such as Airbnb or VRBO. Citing other local municipalities that are dealing with issues related to rentals, town Supervisor John Walker said the moratorium would give the Zoning Board ample time to iron out the language of their zoning laws to avoid any future problems.

“We’ll take a look at it and see what we come up with,” he said. “The Zoning Board does a lot of work and they don’t always get appreciated for what they do.”

One of the municipalities currently involved in a dispute over short-term rentals is the town of Dunkirk, which is currently waiting on a decision from their Zoning Board to rule whether the property being used as a VRBO on Woodlands Drive in Dunkirk is doing so in compliance with town law. The Zoning Board’s vote on the matter was supposed to be held on Wednesday, but was rescheduled at the last minute to Wednesday, May 25, at 5:30 p.m.

Sheridan’s public hearing for the proposed moratorium will be held on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m.

Elsewhere, the village of Lakewood this week adopted a local law establishing a yearlong moratorium on permitting new short-term rentals.
