World War II vet is grand marshal

A World War II veteran and Westfield resident has been named grand marshal by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council for this year’s services and parade that will take place on Memorial Day.

Hoyt Prince, 98, served with the U.S. Army in the infantry working with the motor pool working with medics and anywhere else he was needed.

During a 2014 ceremony honoring veterans, Prince told the News Chief newspaper in Winter Haven, Fla., about how the war then changed the world. “As much as it’s about us being vets,” he told the newspaper, “it’s also about the time and history when we lived.

“We just did what we had to do,” Prince said.

Dunkirk’s Memorial Day service begins at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park on Lake Shore Drive. A parade will follow at 11 a.m. Monday.
