Gowanda school project moving to elementary building

GOWANDA — The Gowanda school district’s capital project is in full swing in its second year, and according to Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson, progress is being made.

Work in the middle school and high school is coming to an end, with the middle school expected to finish up near the end of the summer. The only real hitch has been issues with the supply chain. “Our ceramic tile that was installed in front of the high school was stuck in Portugal for months,” he said. “Those are some of the issues we’ve been running into. But it’s on schedule for the most part.”

Renovations ongoing in the middle school still include a new secured entrance and upgrades to the front office and library, while the high school is in the process of having its new art rooms completed, in addition to a new weight room.

Work in the elementary school will begin this summer, with several improvements coming. Anderson mentioned a new, secure front entrance being added, along with climate control, and renovations of classrooms to make them more modern spaces. “Some of the original rooms in the building are being renovated,” said Dr. Anderson. “That includes things like new cabinets, tiles, paint, and handicap accessibility for students and staff in those rooms.”

In other recent Gowanda business, the district approved several retirements including Data Control Clerk Kathleen Madigan, Special Education Teacher Terri Stearns, Elementary Teacher Kelly Lennertz, Head Custodian Patrick Nixon, Keyboard Specialist Susan Weyand, Remedial Reading Teacher Arlene Biehler, Special Education Teacher Heather Sopko, Cleaner Catherine Smith, and Bus Driver Penny Bridges.

Starting at $3.50/week.
