Pickup driver still recovering from crash

In late June, a fiery crash on a Route 20 bridge in Sheridan involving a van, a TPS tanker, and a pickup that caused the road’s closure as well as the state Thruway to be closed off continues to impact a local family.

While there were no casualties in the accident, 40-year-old construction worker Herbert Overbeck, the driver of the pickup, was hit head on by the tanker, and lost his truck and all his tools used for work, only barely escaping with his life. Family members Jessica and Daniel Woods have organized a GoFundMe to help Overbeck get back on his feet.

“Most of you know Herb from his beautiful contract work with his HWO Construction company,” said Jessica Woods in the GoFundMe post. “Many local families have used him, and continue to fill his schedule. What many people may not realize is his business, reliability, and welfare of his family depend on him, his truck, and his tools. All of which was destroyed by the explosion, in which he barely made it out with his life, almost leaving two daughters and wife alone.”

Woods said the truck Overbeck lost was sentimental to him, in that it was gifted to him after the passing of a loved one, and that the family themselves would never ask for handouts, which is why she’s taken it upon herself to try and garner the support of the community.

“They are always the first to jump and help anyone if they can, and they would struggle in silence rather than ask for help, so we are asking for them,” said Woods in the post.

“As a family and a community, we’ve seen what our town has done together to help its local residents in need. So we are asking you all to please help if you can.”

The goal with the GoFundMe is to get Overbeck back on his feet, allowing him to purchase a new truck, new tools, anything to help him get back on his feet and fulfilling his old contracts, so he can get back to supporting his family.

No charges have been placed against the driver of the van, who has yet to be located and is believed to have caused the June 21 accident.
