Gowanda building receives state grant

GOWANDA — Mayor Dave Smith ranks Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater among the most beautiful attractions in all Western New York. Now, the adjoining building has an opportunity to improve its own image.

The Gowanda Savings and Loan Building right next to Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater was recently awarded a grant from the Preservation League of New York State in the amount of $8,400. The grant will be used to assess and improve the building for the purpose of attracting a new business to occupy the property.

Receiving grants to improve sites in Western New York is nothing new. The theater itself has been applying for grants for over 20 years, according to Mayor Smith.

“We’re happy to get them, because the theater is a huge economic driver for our community. … We’re very excited,” said Mayor Smith.

The Preservation League of NYS selected 22 applicants in 18 counties to receive support totaling $235,920 state-wide. The Village of Lakewood was among those that received a grant, designated for capital improvement of the historic Village Hall.
