Secondary school focus of Dunkirk name change

The junior and senior high school on Sixth Street is the initial focus of the Dunkirk district’s look at renaming buildings.

“We thought we would start slow and look at our secondary (school) building,” Superintendent Michael Mansfield said earlier this month. “The primary schools aren’t really on our radar right now.”

Mansfield was responding to a point brought up by an emailer to the OBSERVER, Brenda Guziec. She noted that since School 7 is on the National Registry of Historic Places, it cannot be renamed. Guziec wondered if the Dunkirk Board of Education knows that the school is on the federally recognized registry.

The superintendent said he knows the building is on the registry, noting that the school district must take special precautions and measures during construction projects there.

Mansfield said he and other district officials are still working on the exact framework for getting public input into renaming schools. The name change issue will be the main subject of a special Dunkirk Board of Education meeting today at 5:30 p.m. in the large instruction room of the high school.

Starting at $3.50/week.
