New Dunkirk playground construction delayed
A new playground in Dunkirk is experiencing the sort of delays that seem to be hitting many construction projects these days.
The site on Eagle Street next to the Dunkirk Middle School building is graded, but devoid of any playground equipment. It was supposed to be finished over the summer.
However, the equipment now won’t even be delivered until the first week of November, according to city Deputy Department of Public Works Director Mike Przybycien.
Meanwhile, a playground on city-leased property near the corner of Marauder Drive and Lucas Avenue still exists, though city officials wanted it removed over the summer due to safety concerns. The parcel is leased from the city school district.
Several community members were upset that the playground was going to be removed, though city officials insisted it would get replaced by a safer, better one on Eagle Street.
Common Council member Nancy Nichols wondered Wednesday at a Department of Public Works meeting who would have liability at the current playground in case of an injury, the city or the school district. She didn’t get an answer.
She added that the playground was supposed to be removed by July 8.
However, with the new one a couple blocks away still far from finished, it remains standing.
