Fredonia eyes lower speed limits on Route 20
OBSERVER Photo by M.J. Stafford The speed limit near Fredonia Central School would get lowered to 20 miles per hour under a proposal now on the table.
Fredonia village officials want to reduce the speed limit on Route 20.
A proposal to do that was unveiled last month at the Board of Trustees meeting. It requires a public hearing, and that took place Monday before the trustees’ regularly scheduled meeting.
The speed limit would be lowered on Route 20 to 30 miles per hour, throughout the village limits. It’s currently 40 miles per hour between Clinton Avenue and the start of the school zone for the Fredonia Central Schools. The road is the village’s Main Street.
In addition, that school zone would get its speed limit lowered from 30 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour.
The proposed changes would require a local law. Former Village Attorney Samuel Drayo, now a Village Hall watchdog, complained last month the law’s text was not accessible to the public. Trustee Nicole Siracuse then read the text, and trustees promised that it will be on the village’s website.
This proposal was floated over the summer by a panel working on a wish list for the state Department of Transportation’s next round of work on Route 20. Siracuse is a member of that group.
