New solar project proposed in Sheridan

SHERIDAN — A potential solar project was presented to the Town Board at the latest meeting in the Town of Sheridan, but as of now, no decision has been made on whether to proceed.

TRC Companies – Consulting, Engineering, Construction Management presented a plan for a 20 Megawatt solar facility spanning across Newell Road to Cook Road near I-90.

The project, if approved, would be the largest project to date in the Town of Sheridan.

It was first brought to the board’s attention about a year ago with SunEast Kingbird LLC holding leases of the area in question.

The Town Board raised concerns about the project spanning across the land of three separate landowners who are leasing the land to the LLC in charge.

The town currently does not allow for multiple landowners in a solar project in its current laws.

Another concern the Town Board shared is how the project is split up, with 3 Megawatts across the road from the majority of the facility, due to unsuitable conditions.

“We’re rather new at this,” said town Supervisor John Walker II. “… The rules we set in place, we haven’t tweaked them at all. This is more than a tweak.

This sets a precedent with the rest of the town, not only on solar, but on other issues. … You can understand we’re a little bit hesitant to accept something that we’re not too sure of.”

After the presentation, the Town Board passed a resolution to direct the Sheridan Planning Board to conduct the Initial Environmental Assessment Review and site plan review for SunEast Kingbird LLC at a public hearing and to return their recommendations and comments to the Town Council in a timely manner.

Starting at $3.50/week.
