Econoburn part of $27M state energy initiative
Brocton business Econo-burn is taking part in a $27 million energy initiative announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday.
Aimed at improving the efficiency of wood-burning and residential heating, Cuomo said his Renewable Heat NY program will help build a sustainable, high-efficiency, low-emissions wood heating sector in upstate New York.
The initiative was launched in Troy on Tuesday at Evoworld Inc., a manufacturer of high-efficiency wood pellet boilers. Representatives from Econoburn, a manufacturer of advanced cordwood boilers, were also in attendance.
Starting in 2015, financial incentives will be offered to retire and recycle outdoor and indoor wood boilers and wood stove technologies and replace them with high-efficiency wood heating systems such as those manufactured by Econoburn. Incentives, through Cuomo’s initiative, will be provided by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
“This is a big deal,” said Mark Odell, vice president of sales for Econoburn. “Our company has been working with NYSERDA for the better part of seven years, evolving technology and trying to make the cleanest biomass project possible.”
Odell said older, outdoor wood boilers have been the prevailing technology for the last 20-35 years.
“NYSERDA is looking to replace those with products like ours,” he said, adding that Econoburn is one of two advanced firewood boiler manufacturers in the state qualified to take part in the incentive program. “We want to shape the industry and marketplace and spur the advancement of this technology. In our sector of the world, there’s going to be a boom.”
According to the company’s website, Econoburn’s wood-fueled boilers allow for greater heat generation and retention. The result is cleaner, less expensive energy, which is the goal of Cuomo’s program.
“This initiative is the most comprehensive in the nation, and I am confident that it will support the continued evolution of a vibrant wood heating sector in rural areas of the state,” Cuomo said.
John Rhodes, president and CEO of NYSERDA, said the initiative will lower costs for high-efficiency, low-emissions wood heating systems and create greater acceptance in the market.
“NYSERDA will jump-start the initiative with large anchor projects, which will help increase demand for wood pellets and decrease the costs for smaller residential and commercial customers as the market grows,” he said.
Additional elements of the initiative will be announced in 2015, including research and development support to drive innovation, further product development and track improvements in wood smoke emissions reductions.
