Crews recover body of kayaker

After almost two days of searching, the body of Dylan Lathrop was recovered near Sunset Bay Thursday morning.

Lathrop, 20, of South Dayton, was kayaking Tuesday night with three friends when his kayak, containing his life jacket, overturned in the rough water. His friends, Joseph Gierszewski, Travis Hunt and Daniel Weaver, all of South Dayton, were able to get to shore and call for help. First responders quickly headed to the breakwall where Lathrop was said to have been boating on the lake side.

The search was called off late Tuesday night and although it continued Wednesday with the help of numerous area fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard’s helicopter, conditions on Lake Erie had not improved, according to Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace.

“(Wednesday) we were hampered with extremely roily water and terrible visibility. Divers were having a very difficult time. … We very much appreciate all the efforts of the first responders that were involved. … The conditions (Wednes-day) were very difficult. Tuesday night they were dangerously difficult, but the first responders went right out. But were unable to locate him,” he explained.

Divers and crews from the State Police, Sheriff’s Water Emergency Team and Navigation Division, County Emergency Services and Sunset Bay Fire Department continued the search Thursday.

Divers from the State Police found Lathrop in 16 feet of water, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

“Conditions improved overnight,” Gerace noted.

Gerace was glad some closure could come to Lathrop’s family and friends.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends in this horrible time,” he said.

This is the second drowning in Chautauqua County this summer; life jackets were not worn in either case.

Starting at $3.50/week.
