Former Big Leg Emma members perform in newly formed band, The Probables

Submitted Photo The Probables, left to right: Corey Kertzie (drums), Tom Hodges (mandolin), Steve Johnson (guitar), Dylan Derby (stand-up bass) and Matt Gronquist (accordion), perform at The Springville Center for the Arts in Springville.

They started off in Big Leg Emma, but now, make way for The Probables, a fire folkgrass roots rock band that’ll be rockin’ Rookies on the Lake on Friday.

The band consists of Steve Johnson, lead singer and former front man of BLE; Tom Hodges, former lead guitar player from BLE and currently plays the mandolin and sings high harmonies; Dylan Derby, from The Derbines is on stand up bass; Matt Gronquist, formerly of The Dirty Mountain Band and Matt Homan & The Bluegrass Disciples, plays accordion and fiddle with the Probables and complimenting vocals in a three part harmony; and Corey Kertzie on drums is also a former BLE band member.

The former three out of six BLE members and their new bandmates are hoping to make a return to the Dunkirk area to transfer some of their BLE fanbase to the new group. The Probables started in April 2016, about a year after BLE disbanded.

“They’ve been doing really well on a regional scale, and we wanted to kind of regenerate some of those fans and transport them over to The Probables,” said band representative John Streed from Blue Moon Management. “So, we decided a Christmas show at Rookies would be awesome.”

“So much great music comes from the great state of New York that it can be a bit overwhelming sometimes to wade through all the new releases. The Probables broke though the stack for me and made an impression with their new EP ‘The Home,'” said Angela Miakoda of “Roots Music Report.” “They call it Folkgrass and I tend to agree. Song writer and singer Steve Johnson gives us some great folk lyrics but I think it’s Matt Gronquist on accordion, Fiddle and Mandolin who crosses it over into that wonder blend of Bluegrass and Folk that makes this band an instant fave.”

The show will be Friday at 9:30 p.m. at Rookies on the Lake, 19 Lake Shore Drive E., Dunkirk.

Starting at $3.50/week.
