‘Obamacare’ repeal would hurt millions in NY

Gov. Andrew Cuomo

ALBANY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo says more than 2.7 million New Yorkers could lose insurance coverage if the Affordable Care Act is repealed.

Locally, that means in Cattaraugus County, 8,310 people are at risk of losing coverage; in Chautauqua County, 15,270 are at risk of losing coverage; and in Erie County, 93,403 people are at risk of losing coverage.

Cuomo, a Democrat, released the figures Wednesday.

His office says counties around the state would lose $600 million in federal funding and the state budget would take a $3.7 billion hit if Republicans in Congress and President-elect Donald Trump dismantle the law.

In the 2016-2017 county budgets, Cattaraugus County is slated to receive $1,211,333, Chautauqua County is slated to receive $2,443,709 and Erie County is slated to receive $17,149,148.

“The cost of a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, to state and local budgets and to the New Yorkers who depend on its health care coverage, is simply too high to justify,” Cuomo said in a news release. “Since its implementation, the Affordable Care Act has become a powerful tool to lower the cost of health insurance for local governments and New Yorkers, and it is essential that the federal government does not jeopardize the health and livelihoods of millions of working families.”

He said that under President Barack Obama’s landmark law, the state’s health exchange has cut the percentage of uninsured New Yorkers from 10 percent to 5 percent.
