Discovery of meth lab in car leads to charges
Two area residents are facing a slew of charges following a vehicle stop in the town of Pomfret by New York State troopers Wednesday evening that resulted in the discovery of a mobile meth lab and counterfeit money.
Troopers pulled over a maroon Saturn traveling on Webster Road in the town. Upon the discovery, the New York State Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team conducted a search and collected evidence.
Following an investigation, Jodi L. Denmead, 54, of Brocton, and Jeffrey A. Schermerhorn, 34, of Westfield, were subsequently charged with first-degree possession of a forged instrument for counterfeit money found in the car, second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, third-degree manufacturing of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of marijuana and a controlled substance not in its original container.
In addition, Denmead was charged with driving while intoxicated by drugs.
In early 2017, Denmead was jailed following the discovery of a mobile meth lab when she was stopped on Dec. 15, 2016 on East Main Street in the village of Brocton. At that time, Denmead was arrested on a prior arrest warrant out of Westfield Town Court on a petit larcey charge.
A search at that time by members of the Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force found a one-pot style methamphetamine laboratory along with other items of laboratory equipment and precursors for the manufacture of methamphetamine. Authorities also reportedly located a digital scale used for weighing controlled substances and an electronic stun gun.
