BARCELONA — Movie buffs and curious onlookers got a behind-the-scenes glimpse of “A Quiet Place 2,” which began filming Tuesday night at Barcelona Harbor.

A crowd began gathering along Route 5 hours before cameras started rolling for the science fiction horror sequel. Many took pictures of the set – which included several prop boats staged in the harbor — while others used binoculars hoping to catch the movie’s director and well-known actor, John Krasinski, who was seen at the pier at sunset.

Martha Bills, Westfield town supervisor, said she’s noticed a bump in traffic and passersby since crews began setting up before the Labor Day holiday.

“Things look like they were going well around the harbor,” Bills said Wednesday. “I have noticed more people coming in to have a glimpse at the activity. I’ve seen a lot of people slowly driving down Route 5, and I have spoken with the police chief who said people have been very cooperative.”

An industrial fan, several boats and cranes with lights, as well as standalone spotlights, were in place around the harbor Tuesday. By dusk, lights were turned on and lifted high above the set.

Bills commended Tim Clark, film commissioner with the Buffalo Niagara Film Office, for his role in helping to bring the movie to Barcelona.

Clark said the film could open the door to future productions locally.

“I think it’s groundbreaking for Chautauqua for sure,” Clark said. “As we expand the number of movies in the western part of New York, Chautauqua County is really fertile ground for movie makers. There are great sites there, such as the Lake Erie shoreline and Chautauqua Lake.”

Clark said filming helps the area in more ways than one. He noted the amount of paint needed for elaborate sets, food for crew members and gas to fuel the many trucks used in the making of the movie.

Bills said she expects filming to have a “positive economic impact” on the area.

“We’ve really been looking forward to it,” she said. “We’re hoping that people come back when the pier is open. … It’s very exciting for our community. It seems like people are really enjoying themselves.”

Majority of filming is expected to take place at night. The pier and beach will be closed to the public through Saturday.

The movie is scheduled to be released in March 2020.
