High winds bring high water
John Forbes sent in this photo of a weird-looking wave along Dunkirk’s waterfront, taken during Monday’s rough weather. The wave appears to have two eyes, a nose and floppy ears, according to Forbes.
Powerful winds overtook the city of Dunkirk and the surrounding area Monday causing Lake Erie to wash out several local areas and creeks.
According the Department of Public Works Director Randy Woodbury, Lake Erie has been at an unusually high level the last several years, and with these incoming winds happening, it has caused the lake to tilt towards the banks of the city.
“The best we could do was close the roads near creeks and waterways and keep the public safe,” Woodbury told the OBSERVER. “The winds were supposed to stay at around 60 MPH, but they peaked in the afternoon at 65 at one point. Dunkirk police said they have never seen Crooked Brook so high.”
DPW worked to close all surrounding water areas including the pier and Point Gratiot Monday until the water levels have receded. So far, some water has flowed back and residents near these waterways are asked to be patient until the water has dissipated entirely.
“We just hope that this is not the new normal,” Woodbury added. “This is the same kind of wind that knocked our wall apart.”
The city was on standby most of the day in case any trees came down, but luckily they dodged a bullet on that.
