Dunkirk City Schools are looking at the next step in their reopening plan with an eye toward November.

With things going seemingly well at the elementary schools, the district has turned its attention to the middle and high schools next.

“The thing that people need to keep in mind is that we’re trying to run an excellent hybrid program and an excellent remote program,” said Middle School Principal Rebecca Farwell at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday. “Our building is split 55-45 so we have a significant chunk of students who want to be hybrid and a significant number that want to be remote.”

The middle school has some tentative dates planned and will be meeting with its reopening committee, team leaders and building representatives this week to share drafts of the reopening plan. Next week they’ll be working with human resources.

“It will probably take us from the middle … to the end of October to rebuild the schedule to create a really good program for hybrid and remote,” Farwell said. “My hope is around November 2 I would like to send parent notifications out of how things are going to lay out for the students.”

The high school has a bit of a different layout as they have Jamestown Community College classes to figure in.

“We are working with a scheduling committee to come up with a solid hybrid plan as well at the high school,” High School Principal JulieAnn Hoerner said. “We are looking at bringing our kids back second quarter.”

The 276 families that were OK with the hybrid model in the high school have been contacted again to make sure that was still what they want. The high school staff is also meeting with their scheduling committee again this week to discuss more of what reopening will look like.

“We are hoping to be bringing our kids in three days a week for the hybrid model,” she said.

According to a calendar shared at the meeting, grade six is looking at tentatively returning on Nov. 9 with seventh and eighth grade returning Nov. 16. At the high school Select Single Section Classes will begin Nov. 2, with a full hybrid model resuming no later than Nov 23.
