Memorial Day parade most likely canceled

It is not looking as through there will be a Memorial Day parade this year in the city of Dunkirk. However, city Mayor Wilfred Rosas is more hopeful when it comes to the largest summer celebration in the north county.

“I’m not too optimistic about the Memorial Day Parade, that is one of our biggest events,” Mayor Wilfred Rosas stated at Tuesday’s Common Council meeting. “It draws in thousands of people. Currently the state is saying that they are allowing now up to 200 people for outdoor events and the Memorial Day Parade is obviously going to draw in more people than that. While we’re hoping that as we move forward into summer that these restrictions get lifted and if they do then we’re going to be planning for a Fourth of July celebration and some of our other events.”

All events for late spring and the rest of the year in 2020 went either virtual or were canceled completely as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the county.

As vaccinations ramp up normalcy is once again taking hold and events will hopefully be held throughout the city.

On Thursday, state Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced there would be fans when the season opens for the New York Yankees and Mets. However, capacity will be limited for the time being.

Starting at $3.50/week.
