SHERIDAN — Due to a last-second cancellation by the Forestville Marching Band, the town of Sheridan will not be able to host it Memorial Day Parade.
Sheridan Town Supervisor John Walker said that while the band will still come play with a few kids at the Memorial Day service, it won’t be enough to do the full parade.
“Without hearing the music, there’s not much for people to line up for,” Walker said. “It’s not that we want to cancel it. Evidently, they thought they could do it, but they can’t because of conflicts with some of the band members.”
In lieu of the parade, the Memorial Day services in Sheridan will start at noon on Memorial Day, which is when the parade would have taken place. The services will take place at the normal cemetery.
But residents in Sheridan will have other things to do on Memorial Day, even without the parade. The Sheridan Historical Society will be open for a bake sale and to visit, and the Sheridan Fire Department will be holding a chicken barbeque beginning at noon and going throughout the day.
Later this summer, the Sheridan Summer Youth Recreation will be making its return, run by Shannon Aures-Karcz, who has been running the program for nearly 20 years. Aures-Karcz said that she’s excited to work with all the kids in town.
“I am really looking forward to making some new memories with the children and grandchildren of Sheridan,” said Aures-Karcz.
The program will run from 9 a.m. to noon from Tuesday, July 5, to Friday, July 29. The program will feature swimming at the Dunkirk CC, and some field trips that Aures-Karcz is excited for. The program will also have the old favorites of Survivor, Mystery Monday, and many others. Registration details will be announced soon.
The next Sheridan Town Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. and they will also have a workshop meeting on Wednesday, May 25 at 7 p.m.
