Rec program is showing promise in Silver Creek

SILVER CREEK — The village of Silver Creek and town of Hanover’s Youth Recreation and NFL Flag Football program are going on in full force, running concurrently in the coming weeks.

Silver Creek Mayor Jeff Hornburg said that there are 105 kids signed up for the Youth Recreation program, which got off to a bit of a rocky start, but is now running up to speed. “The first week went like any other first week,” said Hornburg. “The first day was horrendous, the second day was bad, the third day was not as bad, and by Thursday we got the hang of it. Everything is going along good.”

Hornburg said the first day fiasco involved traffic, and had nothing to do with the kids themselves, and everything has gone well since then. Hornburg is pleased with the job Lexi Conner is doing with the program.

Meanwhile, the NFL Flag Football program is new to the village, and was spearheaded by village historian and Hanover town councilman Lou Pelletter. Pelletter said he’s continually more impressed with the program as it goes on.

“I was happy with the program to start with, but I’m really happy with it now,” said Pelletter. “The parking lot is full and the field is full. They have four groups on the field at one time. It’s good.”

There are around the same number of kids participating in the Flag Football program as there are in Youth Rec, spanning all age groups. The program runs Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with kids ages five through eight going from 6-7 p.m. and kids nine through 12 going from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The program also features a mix of boys and girls participating, with the cost of entrance only being $25.

“For $25, you can’t beat that,” said Pelletter. “Youth rec is paying for the rest of it.”

Pelletter said the basketball program this year had 135 kids, and because Flag Football was done on such short notice, Pelletter expects there to be a larger turn out next year.

In other Silver Creek business, the VIllage once again applied for the Community Development Block Grant following two public hearings prior to Monday’s meeting. Eileen Powers presented VIllage officials with all the necessary information, and Hornburg thanked her for her work in the process.

“I know going through the last couple years with COVID, itw as stressful to say the least,” said Hornburg. “Hopefully if we’re fortunate enough to be awarded it again, the next one will go a little smoother.”

The Silver Creek Planning Board will also be meeting soon to further iron out Silver Creek’s laws in regard to short-term rentals, among other things.

The next Silver Creek Village Board meeting will be on Monday at 7:30 p.m. More information on the NFL’s Flag Football program can be found at https://nflflag.com/.
