Essek says solar project proposal off

The sun set last week on a proposed project to partially power Fredonia government buildings with solar power.

Fredonia Mayor Douglas Essek told the Board of Trustees that a representative of Siemens, the outfit that proposed the project at the board’s last meeting, gave him two reasons it cannot go forward.

First, the mayor said, National Grid is close to its green energy capacity in this area. The utility recently told local town supervisors to accept fewer solar projects because of that, he added, quoting Richard Dixon, chief financial officer of the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency, who spoke at the IDA’s September meeting.

Also, Essek noted, the town of Pomfret recently passed a requirement that all solar farms must be set back at least 250 feet from the road.

“That would kind of make this impossible,” he said. The project was proposed for village-owned land on Glasgow Road in Pomfret.

Starting at $3.50/week.
