Gowanda reports decrease in state test proficiency

GOWANDA — The most recent Gowanda Board of Education meeting included a report of alarming statistics regarding state test scores.

In grades three to eight, the scores showed a decrease in proficiency, on par with the statewide decrease in test scores since the pandemic. The district was at only 33 percent proficiency in English and Language Arts, with 54 students opting out or absent during the testing timeframe. Regarding the Mathematics state test, only 28 percent of Gowanda students were deemed proficient, while 113 students opted out or were absent. Both proficiency numbers were below the state average.

On a more positive note, the board also learned the district’s number of student-athletes has stayed consistent, despite a slight drop in enrollment. Even with 20 fewer students enrolled, the district had 20 more athletes than the previous year. The district also highlighted how the cheer program has many multi-sport athletes. Attendance at sporting events in the district has risen over the past year, as well.

Also at the recent meeting, six 8th grade students in the Gowanda Central School District gave a presentation to the Board of Education at a recent meeting regarding their proposed class trip to Gettysburg. The board was impressed by the presentation.

Then shortly afterward, five members of the Gowanda baseball program stood before the board and presented their proposed trip to Myrtle Beach. The trip would be near the beginning of the spring sports season. The board also appeared impressed by their presentation.
