Jamestown man charged in Ripley dirt bike theft

A Jamestown man was charged Saturday after an investigation into the June theft of a dirt bike in Ripley.

At about 2:30 p.m., the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and troopers out of Fredonia charged Cortland J. Hepfner, 22, with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree burglary, both felonies.

On June 9, troopers responded to a burglary complaint on Klondike Road. The complainant stated an unknown person had gained access into their garage through a window and stole a Kawasaki dirt bike worth $4,000. Just a few days later, troopers located the stolen property in the town of Dunkirk and returned it to the owner. Throughout the investigation, multiple sources would name Hepfner as the primary suspect in the burglary.

Troopers located Hepfner in the city of Jamestown and transported him to Fredonia for questioning. Further investigation would reveal Hepfner was already on probation for a prior burglary.

Hepfner was sent to the Chautauqua County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
