A second suspect has been arrested in a July shooting incident involving two children along Route 60.

Dunkirk police on Thursday announced the arrest of Juan Cruz Corraliza, 40, of Dunkirk on a grand jury indictment warrant. He was taken into custody by the US Marshals Office Fugitive from Justice Unit on Nov. 22. After being tracked to locations inside and outside of New York state he was finally found to be hiding in a trailer in the town of Hanover where he refused to come out. Cruz-Corraliza was taken into custody on the Warrant by the US Marshals with assistance of their K-9 unit. He was turned over to Dunkirk police for transport to the Chautauqua County Jail. Cruz-Corraliza was arraigned before County Court Judge David Foley who set bail at $10,000 cash and $20,000 bond. He posted bail following the arraignment.

Witnesses, according to the Dunkirk Police Department, said a southbound vehicle on Route 60 was passed by another vehicle around 8:30 p.m., at which point shots were fired on July 17. Afterward, occupants inside the vehicle struck by the gunfire sought safety and medical assistance at the Route 60 Red Apple Kwik Fill in Fredonia. The children, age 8 and 11, were taken to Brooks-TLC Hospital in Dunkirk. The 8-year-old female victim of the shooting suffered life-threatening injuries and she is still recovering due to the severity of those injuries.

In September, suspect Javier Cruz-Corraliza was taken into custody in Canton, Ohio, by the US Marshals Office Fugitive from Justice Unit on the same charges. He was arraigned at that time with the DA’s Office requesting bail of $200,000 and $400,000. County Court Judge Foley set his bail at $25,000 and $50,000. Javier Cruz-Corraliza also posted his bail following the arraignment.

“We want to thank everyone who assisted in this investigation, especially the EMS Personnel who treated the victims and the US Marshals Fugitive from Justice Unit that worked hard to successfully track and apprehended these two suspects,” the city police department noted in the news release.
