Students from Dunkirk Intermediate School livened up a Board of Education meeting Tuesday with a number from their upcoming musical, “Newsies Jr.”

The kids did “King of New York,” starting with dialogue and breaking into song and dance. They got a well-deserved standing ovation.

“Newsies Jr.” tells a story from the New York newspaper strike of 1899. The children of the city took on newspaper tycoons and won a legal battle over working rights for juveniles. This helped set up future, permanent workplace safeguards for children.

Show dates are Friday, Jan. 20, Saturday, Jan. 21 and Monday, Jan. 23. All shows start at 7 p.m. in the Dunkirk Intermediate School auditorium.
