UPDATE: Wrong way crash kills two in Ellicott

Two people, one driving the wrong way on Interstate 86, were killed in a crash Saturday in the town of Ellicott.

The collision occurred shortly before 6 p.m., between the Strunk Road and North Main Street Extension exits, in the westbound lane of the interstate.

According to the New York State Police, the agency handling the investigation, a driver in a 2009 Toyota Camry traveling east struck a westbound 2019 Ram 1500. The Ram was then hit from behind by a 2020 Freightliner.

The operator of the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction, later identified as Mathew A. Berry of Randolph, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Berry had been reported missing Saturday.

There were two occupants in the Ram that was traveling west; one of the occupants, identified as Jamestown resident Todd A. Town, 57, was later pronounced dead while the other, Sandra L. Town, 54, suffered serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.

Officers with several departments were alerted at about 5:50 p.m. of a vehicle traveling east in the westbound lane of the interstate. One driver reported being hit by the wrong-way vehicle and pulled over uninjured.

Berry continued driving east in the westbound lane.

About a minute later, the fatal collision occurred.

Both lanes of I-86 were closed to traffic due to the crash and to allow for two medical helicopters to land on the road. County fire police personnel were summoned to assist with traffic control.

An investigation into the crash remains ongoing. The State Police Collision Reconstruction and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are assisting in this investigation.

Firefighters from Fluvanna, Bemus Point and Ellery responded Saturday, along with Chautauqua County EMS and officers with the Ellicott Police Department.
