Fredonia parts with grant writer, tech outfit

Fredonia waved goodbye to a grant writer and a computer support company this week.

The village Board of Trustees ended its contract with Urban Vantage of Buffalo. The firm’s co-founder, Travis Gordon, had worked with the village on grants since September 2019. The trustees gave Urban Vantage a new one-year contract in January 2022, but opted not to renew it. Fredonia officials expect their new water infrastructure consultants, LaBella and Associates, to help with grants to repair and update the system.

Village officials expressed unhappiness with the pace and scale of grant writing efforts in 2021, and the Board of Trustees called Gordon onto the carpet to explain himself that November.

Trustees subsequently looked at not renewing Urban Vantage’s contract and giving Treasurer Erlyssa LeBeau extra money to write grants. The trustees wound up giving the company a new contract for 2022.

Also Monday, the village terminated its contract with tech support company SymLink of Jamestown.

Village officials blasted SymLink’s work at a trustee meeting a couple of weeks ago. LeBeau said the company’s representative was completely unresponsive. Mayor Douglas Essek said it appeared SymLink never did some of the computer system upgrades it was contracted to do.

Fredonia’s contract with SymLink was to run through 2024, but that’s apparently over. The resolution read by Trustee James Lynden Monday stated “the village has been unable to contact SymLink for services for months,” and sought termination for failure to meet the contract’s terms.
