Witness feared the worst before crash

Todd Morrison was driving Saturday evening with his wife, on their way to dinner, when he spotted the vehicle heading in their direction.

The couple was traveling west on Interstate 86, not far from the split that takes motorists either over the Chautauqua bridge or toward Bemus Point. Morrison tried to warn the driver of the oncoming sedan, traveling in the wrong direction, by flashing his vehicle’s lights several times and hitting the horn.

With its headlights off, the vehicle drove past Morrison and his wife in the left lane. It was about 5:45 p.m.

“You could tell they were going fast,” Morrison said Monday. “It just seemed like they were flying. … As soon as it happened, I knew someone was going to get killed.”

About 5 miles later, the east-traveling sedan struck a 2019 Ram 1500 head-on, killing the wrong-way driver as well as an occupant inside the pickup truck. The New York State Police over the weekend said its investigation into the collision remained ongoing.

“We knew something was going to happen,” Morrison said. From their vehicle, the Morrisons called 911 after encountering the wrong-way 2009 Toyota Camry, being operated by 30-year-old Mathew Berry of Randolph.

Morrison believes Berry most likely drove over the Chautauqua bridge in the wrong direction due to his vantage point traveling west on the interstate. He and his wife were on their way to Guppy’s Restaurant & Tavern when they encountered the Camry.

“I flashed my lights for a good five seconds,” Morrison said.

In addition to Berry, the New York State Police said Todd Town, 57, was killed in the crash. After the collision, the pickup truck was struck by a 2020 Freightliner.

Another passenger in the Ram was airlifted to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured, the state police said in an updated news release.

While at the restaurant, Morrison saw an ambulance drive past and later saw that the westbound lane of the interstate had been closed to traffic.

He remains broken up over the incident.

“You just feel like you could have done something — try to have done something more,” he said.

Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies and state troopers had been alerted of an eastbound vehicle in the westbound lane of I-86. One driver reported being side-swiped by the wrong-way vehicle and pulled over.

About a minute later, the fatal collision occurred.

It’s not yet clear why or how Berry came to be driving in the westbound lane. The New York State Police said an investigation found that the Randolph man “suffers from mental illness and was reported missing to Chautauqua County 911” on Saturday.

Both lanes of I-86 were closed to traffic due to the crash and to allow for two medical helicopters to land on the road. County fire police personnel were summoned to assist with traffic control.

The eastbound lane was reopened first, with the westbound lane remaining closed a while longer.

The State Police Collision Reconstruction and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted in the investigation.

Firefighters from Fluvanna, Bemus Point and Ellery responded Saturday, along with Chautauqua County EMS and officers with the Ellicott Police Department.

A GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/5a6a129e) has been set up for the Town family following Saturday’s crash.

“This is hard news to make sense of, especially for anyone who knows the family and this fun and lively couple,” a note on the fundraiser states. “Family is everything to them and I know right now, their worlds have fallen apart.”
