WESTFIELD — A barn was destroyed, but nearby structures were protected after a fire broke out Monday night in the town.

An investigation into the blaze at 7565 Bliss Road in Westfield remains ongoing, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Westfield firefighters were alerted at about 8:30 p.m. to the barn fire. According to Fire Chief Chris Reese, the structure was fully engulfed by flames when the first firefighter arrived.

Reese noted that there were three adjacent structures nearby, two larger barns and a house.

Firefighters from Portland, Brocton, Ripley, Mayville, Chautauqua, Sherman and Ellery assisted at the scene, as did the county’s Tech Rescue team, Chautauqua County EMS and the county’s fire investigators.

Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby structures.

Reese praised Don Farnham, a Westfield village employee, who provided a mini excavator to help peal metal siding from the barn and to stack it — making it easier and safer for firefighters to be around.

“Great job to everyone on location,” Reese said in a message posted to Facebook. “We had some ups and downs, but overall everyone did a fantastic job for the hand we were dealt. Crews contained the fire to one barn.

This fire had the potential to spread to two large barns and a house, so kudos for saving the bigger structures.”

No injuries were noted.

In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said the cause and origin of Monday night’s fire have not been determined.
