Amanda Kulig, a fifth-grade teacher at Dunkirk Intermediate School, teamed up with all the fifth-grade staff and Marcus Promber, owner of Can Kings, to partake in a Winter Can Drive. Kuilg and Promber previously worked together on several occasions raising money within the district to give back to the community.
“We believe it is important to teach our students that giving shouldn’t just happen during the holidays — to give back to the community and try to help the less fortunate,” Kulig stated.
The students chose the Lakeshore Humane Society as their beneficiary. The Can Drive raised more than $100 to purchase items needed at the facility. Rock Vallone, a former administrator for Dunkirk City School District, and all the staff at Lakeshore Humane Society were grateful to all parties involved.
Lakeshore Humane Society provided the students with a tour of the facility, where everyone was able to meet the animals looking for forever homes.

A Spring Can Drive will be in full effect after the holiday break. Cans are always accepted at Can Kings, located at 112-114 E. Main Street, Fredonia. Contact Can Kings at (716) 818-8322.
Drop-offs can be made in respect to the Dunkirk Intermediate School 5th Grade Can Drive. All proceeds are donated to a local charity of the students’ choice.
