Hanover approves new town workers

HANOVER — A recent meeting of the Hanover Town Board had a major focus on personnel, so much so that an executive session to discuss personnel lasted nearly as long as the entire rest of the meeting itself.

After the meeting was officially opened, Town Supervisor called for a moment of silence to honor Dunkirk Town Supervisor Richard Purol – a 50-year member of the East Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department – and Buffalo Firefighter Jason Arno, each of whom recently passed away. Then, within three minutes of opening the meeting, Johnson called the Town Council into executive session “for personnel matters” with Councilmen Bernie Feldmann and Ed Schintzius motioning, and all members of the Town Council in favor. The Town Council returned to the meeting at 8:10 p.m., when the meeting was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Once the Town Council returned and public comments were heard, Town Attorney Jeff Passafaro read a resolution that proposed the hiring of Richard Vasile and Vincent Gugliuzza as temporary contracted inspection and enforcement officers under the state’s uniform codes. Vasile and Gugliuzza will each receive $25 per hour for 20 hours per pay period. John Kennedy was also hired as a part-time property maintenance outside contractor at $22 per hour for a maximum of 40 hours per pay period. The three part-time employees were hired after “an unexpected vacancy of the Town of Hanover Code Enforcement Officer.” Hanover’s former Code Enforcement Officer Daniel Hogg will continue to serve in the Village of Silver Creek, but no longer in the Town of Hanover.

Later in the meeting, the Town Council also approved the hiring of part-time seasonal employees for the Boat Launch. Herman Griewisch Jr., Phillip Erick Jr., Thomas Breckon, Ernest Frommer, James Koehler, James Brauer, and Ronald Chwojdak were all hired as Recreation Attendants at the rate of $15.35 per hour. Griewisch was also previously approved as a Utility Worker at $15.85 per hour, while Erick was also previously approved as a Substitute Laborer at $15 per hour.

The Town of Hanover is also seeking an additional 1-2 lifeguards for the summer. The Town will cover the cost of training for new lifeguards, which will be held at the Town Beach at Sunset Bay. Contact Hanover Town Clerk Tim Crino at (716) 934-2273 for more information.

Hanover Town Attorney Jeff Passafaro crafted a resolution to allow the Town of Hanover to approve new workers to account for an unexpected vacancy with the Town’s Code Enforcement Office.

The Town Council also approved recruits Cari Hartinger and Kelsey Bearce for active membership to the Sunset Bay Volunteer Fire Company.

The next Hanover Town Council meeting has been moved to Tuesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m.
