Pomfret water dispute may end soon

Pomfret’s top official offered indications Wednesday that the town’s water billing dispute with the village of Fredonia is headed to a resolution.

Dan Pacos, Pomfret supervisor, told the Town Board at its monthly meeting that Fredonia Treasurer Erlyssa LeBeau has agreed to review the last six years’ worth of bills to Pomfret customers.

“Bottom line is, it’s going to be consensus and it’s going to be taken care of,” Pacos said.

The town supervisor said he was probably going to sit down with village officials in the coming days to hash out the dispute. Pomfret says Fredonia is double-billing several properties in the town. Meanwhile, Fredonia complains that Pomfret is withholding user fee payments that it says are in the contract between them.

Pacos expressed worries that the state Comptroller’s Office might step in if an agreement is done improperly. “Whatever we do, I want to do it amicably — but I don’t want to open up the village or town to citing,” he said.

Deputy Town Supervisor Ann Eckman had a response to Fredonia officials who allege Pomfret has not communicated with the village properly throughout the dispute.

“The supervisor and I have 14 months’ worth of emails (from us) asking for meetings,” she said.
