Boxing tourney set for city pier
A youth boxing tournament is set for the Dunkirk Pier.
The tourney will be run by Dunkirk’s 2XL and will be held June 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. The city’s Common Council authorized the event Tuesday.
“This is a new event, an exciting event,” said Ryan Hall, city recreation coordinator. “It’s an amateur boxing (competition), ages 10-16, and they all are certified. It’s all sanctioned boxing matches.”
Hall said there will be 12 matches, all involving Dunkirk residents.
The event will be part of Dunkirk’s “Fired Up for Summer” celebration, which is June 9-10.
Mayor Wilfred Rosas noted to council members the pier will be closed for the event from about 10 a.m. to as late as 9 p.m. on June 10. That’s because 2XL needs time to set up and remove the boxing rings.
“In years past, we always get boaters and fishermen who end up complaining” when the pier is closed, he said.
