Fire that damaged Dunkirk home ruled accidental

A fire that damaged a Dunkirk home Tuesday afternoon has been ruled accidental in nature.
No injures were reported after dispatch at 3:13 p.m. received several calls for a structure fire at 137 Maple Ave.
"Upon arrival, heavy fire was noted on the first floor extending into the second floor in the rear of the two family home," the Dunkirk Fire Department said. "The fire was knocked down on the first floor as the second floor apartment became heavily involved in fire due to failing windows from excessive heat."
Firefighters from East Dunkirk and Fredonia assisted at the scene. Alstar EMS and a Chautauqua County fire coordinator also responded.
Firefighters advanced a hose line up the rear stairway and extinguished the fire in the second floor apartment.
"An extensive overhaul began on both floors of the structure to extinguish hot spots and search for hidden fire," the Dunkirk Fire Department said.
Residents on the first floor were home and managed to escape uninjured and the second floor residents were not home at that time. Two dogs were rescued and administered oxygen on the scene.
All equipment cleared the scene by 5:20 p.m.
An investigation determined the fire was caused by cooking oil left on an unattended stove stop.
