Fire in Dunkirk closes portion of Route 60

A major fire in Dunkirk has closed down Route 60.

As of 3:45 p.m., firefighters were still battling a blaze at 137 Maple St. The building is across Seventh Street from School No. 3.

There was heavy damage in the rear of the building. Dunkirk firefighters deployed their ladder truck, with fire apparently getting into the roof.

The Fredonia and East Dunkirk fire departments were also on scene. Dunkirk police shut down nearby portions of Seventh Street and Route 60.

An Alstar Ambulance was also there. There were no immediately apparent injuries.

National Grid also showed up to shut off power to the house.

About 50 onlookers watched the building burn.
