Opera House hoping volunteers step up for coming race

Runners depart from the starting line at a past 1891 Run for the Opera House.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is seeking a few volunteers to help with its 1891 Run on Sunday, April 23 at 9 a.m. The 5K Run/Walk will begin and end in front of the Village Hall and Opera House.

Volunteers are needed to help with the annual event, especially to help control traffic along the race route, which includes Temple Street, Central Avenue, and Brigham Road. Volunteers are needed for no more than three hours, and possibly less depending on the task.

Anyone willing to help with the event is asked to contact Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis at 716-679-0891, ext. 3, or via email at rickdavis@fredopera.org.

In addition, potential runners and walkers still can register to participate in the event. The course is flat and fast, with a short incline at the beginning; it is USATF-certified as Course #NY17080JG.

Prizes will be randomly drawn from all registrants, and medals will be awarded to male and female finishers overall and in various age categories.

Students under 21 can register for $15, while adult runners or walkers can register for $25 before race day or $30 on the day of the race. Armchair runners are also welcome to donate to support the Opera House.

The event is the major fund-raiser for the Opera House. This is the sixth year of the run, and the second year that it is one of the featured races in the Chautauqua Striders Runner of the Year series.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia.
