Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas has proposed partial city funding of Fredonia's water system study -- if it includes a look at intermunicipal line connections.
"Basically I'm agreeing to propose to the City Council that the city pay approximately 20% of the cost... and I will propose to the county that they cover some of that to bring the total (funding) to 50%," Rosas said Tuesday.
Rosas thinks the "county would be more than happy to support something like this. As far as I'm concerned, we should be thinking in terms of regional solutions."
He added, "Why should Fredonia taxpayers have to put the kind of money they're going to have to put into their infrastructure, their plant, their pump station, when they don't have to do all of that?"
The mayor said the city has invested $25 million in its water plant in recent years and reiterated that Dunkirk could fully supply Fredonia with water.
Rosas was referring to a water infrastructure study that is set to be done in Fredonia. LaBella and Associates recently offered a quote on such a study. Trustee Jon Espersen was going to ask for a resolution to approve a study Monday but held back so everyone could have time to digest the LaBella proposal.
