BROCTON -- The village will be keeping a closer eye on its grounds, as it recently approved the purchase of new security cameras for the village park.
The security equipment will be purchased through DFT Communications at a cost of $11,595.
"Hopefully this will make it a safer place for our kids," said Trustee Kari Doino. "... I think it's great to go with DFT. They're local."
Village security cameras in nearby Silver Creek have proven to be a worthwhile investment, as Silver Creek's system has twice caught notable activity on camera in recent months. An alleged armed robbery suspect was caught on village cameras fleeing the scene after leaving Rite Aid in early February. More recently, a group of youths were seen throwing a ball around the village square which broke the top of the village fountain.
"It's not going to get any cheaper," Brocton Mayor Craig Miller said of the cost. "I think we really need this security down there."
The security system will be monitored through the village offices. The cameras will have a live feed and will record, and the village will coordinate with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department, as well.
"If something has occurred down there, then we have the record of it, we can review it," said Trustee Mark Belcher. "Just having the evidence is important."
