Brocton summer concerts announced

BROCTON — Thanks to donations from three individuals in addition to the Village of Brocton and the Town of Portland, the Ahira Hall Memorial Library has a full slate of summer concerts and movies this July and August.

Beginning July 6 through Aug. 17, weekly concerts will be held at Ryckman Park located at Fay Street and Green Street in Brocton. Seven acts were booked, along with two movie nights scheduled, as well. All seven concerts begin at 6:30 p.m., while movie nights begin at dusk.

“We used to do six (concerts) but due to financial limitations, we cut it down,” said Library Director Julie Morrison Putcher.

Brocton Mayor Craig Miller initially proposed sponsoring a concert on behalf of the village. The village approved a $500 donation in March and was later met with a matching $500 donation from the Town of Portland.

Kicking off the concert series on July 6 is Along for the Ride. Next, on July 13, Scott McElahney and Bill Piper will have a blues concert. Pat Cook’s Women of Country takes the stage on July 20. July closes with New Horizons Concert Band on July 27.

August begins with the Cassadaga Area Concert Band on Aug. 3. The following week, Scot Laurie will play the lone Friday night concert of the series on Aug. 11. Finally, the concert series concludes with Pedro and the Smooth Cats on Aug. 17.

Putcher noted the concerts have a base of regulars every year, along with an influx of new guests with each act. “We have about 30-40 that are there almost every week,” Putcher said.

Friday, July 14, the library will show the film Zootopia. The film chosen for the month of August is Patron Vote, set for Friday, Aug. 11.

Before the concert series gets underway, however, the library is asking for community support at the second annual Library Beautification Day. Set for June 3 beginning at 10 a.m., the library and community volunteers will be fixing up the area in and around the library for summer activities, including youth recreation visits.

The library is seeking gardening tools, cleaning supplies, outdoor plants, snacks, and bottled water as donations. A t-shirt fundraiser will be held to support the library and its cause, at a cost of $15 for youth sizes, $18 for XL, and $20 for XXL and up. Contact the library at (716) 792-9418 or stop by at 37 W. Main Street, Brocton for more information or to volunteer.
