‘Chicken dilemma’ debated in Arkwright

By Braden Carmen 2 min read

ARKWRIGHT -- A chicken has flown the coop in Arkwright by result of fowl play.

A town resident's dog in Arkwright killed the chicken of a neighboring property owner.

The owner of the chicken allegedly threatened to shoot the dog, and the dog owner has been warned multiple times and cited.

"Technically speaking, that can end a dog," said town Supervisor Brian McAvoy. "You don't want that to happen, but you've got to keep your dogs at home,"

One member of the Arkwright Town Board offered a solution based off her own experience in the chicken owner's shoes.

"Forestville had a chicken reimbursement law. If a dog killed a chicken, the town reimbursed them for that chicken.

It was really great because I lost five chickens, and I got reimbursed for them, and it really soothed the chicken dilemma," Town Board member Lynn Bedford said.

"I never thought about that," McAvoy responded. "It has probably been on the books from the 1800s."

Bedford laughed and continued, "I thought, 'Really, you're going to reimburse me for my five chickens?' ... It was great. I really forgave the dog. I got new chickens."

No further action was taken at the meeting.
