City ‘deeply impacted’ after shooting

More than 24 hours after the incident took place, Dunkirk police continued to seek the public’s assistance after a shooting on Maple Avenue in the area of East Sixth Street.

In a news release issued Tuesday night, officers said they were called to the disturbance where shots were fired and one person was struck after 4:25 p.m. The victim was transported to Brooks-TLC Hospital System in Dunkirk and later transferred to ECMC in Buffalo via Mercy Flight. This incident occurred among people who know each other, officers said.

While at the scene, it appeared there were a number of shell casings surrounding the house and near a parked vehicle. Officers spent most of the time at the location of 90 Maple Ave. Jamestown also police assisted at the location.

For more than three hours, small crowds quietly gathered around the location at Sixth Street, many with questions regarding what happened earlier in the day. Most expressed shock and disappointment while others lamented the actions that took place in a neighborhood appeared to be close in nature.

The main thoroughfare — the street is a portion of Route 60 — was closed until 7:45 p.m. Tuesday before being reopened to traffic.

An additional police presence was noted Wednesday at the Dunkirk City Schools in the aftermath of the incident. On its Facebook page, the district said the “events have deeply impacted the Dunkirk community and left us all shocked and saddened. We offer our support and sympathy to the families and friends of those affected.”

District officials also noted there were the “necessary resources and support systems” for students who requested or needed assistance. “We will continue to support and assist all members of our community during this difficult time,” the district said.

The Dunkirk Police Department was assisted by county District Attorney Jason Schmidt, New York State Police, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Jamestown Police Department, University Police, Chautauqua County Forensic Investigation Team, Dunkirk Fire Department and Alstar Ambulance.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed or have video of this incident, to contact the police desk at 716-366-2266 or the confidential tipline at 716-363-0313.
