City of Dunkirk fighting seagulls, geese

Dunkirk’s latest Battle of the Birds is on.

City officials said this week that contractors for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed a bunch of seagull nests on April 21. According to city Code Enforcement Officer Glenn Christner, they got rid of 250 nests.

Seagull flocks are a common nuisance in Dunkirk, of course. Lately, a lot of the gulls prefer to congregate in and around the Save-a-Lot Plaza between Third and Fourth streets.

Christner and Common Council member Natalie Luczkowiak have spearheaded the effort to remove the nests. Business owners in the area are funding it.

“I heard the seagulls are pretty angry,” Luczkowiak said.

As for the decision to remove nests, wildlife officials “are 100% sure this is the most prudent solution out there,” she said.

If nothing was done, the problem would only get worse, she added.

It’s also something that will have to be monitored regularly. In fact, the wildlife contractors were set to return on sometime last week to grab more nests. They will return every couple of weeks until the seagull flocks go down, Luczkowiak said.

“We will have to monitor it year by year,” she added.

There is also a bird problem in Memorial Park. That’s Canada goose territory. Geese feces often covers walking paths, making for a disgusting experience.

City officials want to eject the Canadian invaders from the park dedicated to Americans who fell in battle.

Christner said contractors will be there to trap geese in June.
