Fredonia Central School District hires two new teachers

Over the past few months, the Fredonia Central School District has accepted many resignations for the purpose of retirement. However, at a recent meeting of the Board of Education, two new employees were welcomed as part of the new era of Fredonia teachers.
Tehya Sharp and Mason Redmond were in attendance at a recent meeting of the Board of Education as each of their probationary appointments as secondary education teachers were unanimously approved.
"We're very happy, pleased, and proud to have both people coming on board," Fredonia Superintendent Brad Zilliox said.
Sharp, a former Fredonia student who later transferred to Dunkirk, graduated from Jamestown Community College, then SUNY Fredonia. She served as a SUNY Fredonia intern at Fredonia Middle School, which Zilliox called "a nice connection." She also worked as a teacher assistant at SUNY Fredonia, and also has a security guard license.
"I am excited to try new things with the students and see where that can take them," she said. "I have a lot that I have learned about over the last six years in college that I would like to employ in the classroom. ... One of the biggest things is seeing each student as an individual, and working from that and making curriculum that works for them specifically."
Sharp is expected to obtain initial certification in Biology for grades seven to 12 later this month. Sharp's tenure will commence Aug. 30. She will work in the middle school science department.
"I'm just super excited. To get the chance to interview, I took a chance there and was hoping something would come of it. I'm so happy to be here tonight," Sharp said.
Redmond comes to Fredonia after a year teaching in Buffalo at Health Sciences Charter School. He taught previously in Maryland, where he graduated with bachelor's and master's degrees from Saint Mary's College of Maryland. Board of Education member Sheila Hahn noted she has a niece who graduated from Saint Mary's College of Maryland, and called it "an excellent liberal arts college."
Redmond has six years of prior teaching experience across both middle and high school levels, including International Baccalaureate programming, honors courses, and even film elective courses. He also has experience as a girls soccer coach and as a club advisor.
Redmond holds initial certification in English Language Arts 7-12. His tenure will commence Aug. 30.
"I'm really excited to get started here. I just moved here in August, so that part I'm very new to, but teaching at a school like this is not foreign to me. I'm just really thankful and excited," he said.
