The Pomfret Town Board has passed a local law changing a zoning designation to allow a future move of Town Hall.
No one attended the required public hearing held before the vote, which happened at the board's monthly meeting in June. The vote was 4-0, with board member Christopher Schaeffer not present.
Town Supervisor Dan Pacos asked for a negative State Environmental Quality Review declaration from the board prior to the vote, which was granted. He did so on the advice of Town Attorney Jeffrey Passafaro.
The local law changes Pomfret's zoning to allow a new municipal building in certain mixed-use residential/commercial districts. Such a building cannot get approved by the town outright but would have to get a special use permit.
Pacos told the OBSERVER in May that town officials want to move from their current town hall on Day Street in the village of Fredonia. They feel the current site doesn't have enough space.
It's too costly to build right now, so the town is "looking at a couple buildings but I can't go into specifics," Pacos said. Pomfret would use grant and American Rescue Plan Act funding for the move.
