Town sets hearing for limits on rentals

OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen The Dunkirk Town Board recently held a special meeting to set a public hearing for a local law pertaining to short-term rental properties in the town.

Finally, a resolution is on the horizon for the town of Dunkirk’s most controversial topic.

Before an audience of Dunkirk Town residents Sue Hazelton, Phil Leone, Irene Strychalski, Barbara Warren, and Jay Warren, the Dunkirk Town Board scheduled a public hearing on a final draft of the proposed local law regarding short-term rental properties. The public hearing will take place on June 20 at 6 p.m., with a regularly scheduled Town Board meeting to follow later that evening.

“This is an ongoing project for all of us concerned here on the board and in the township,” said town Supervisor Juan Pagan. “It will be on our agenda at the next meeting.”

According to the law, short-term rentals would not be allowed in single-family residential districts. In addition, all short-term rentals will require a permit that would be for a one-year term.

Once the public hearing is held, the Town Board has the ability to pass the local law, if it so chooses. The law would then take effect once it is filed with the state.

A full copy of the law as it will be presented for the public hearing will be made available at the Town Hall and online at dunkirkny.org.

The public hearing was scheduled at a special meeting of the Dunkirk Town Board, just over a week after a regular meeting of the Town Board that featured multiple speakers on the matter. After comments from Leone, Hazelton, and Warren at the previous meeting, the Town Board made final revisions to the law so it is ready to present.

No public comments were made at the special meeting, which lasted just over five minutes.
