Suspects are sought in a triple tree planting at Point Gratiot in Dunkirk.
Someone planted three ash trees there, it was reported at the June meeting of the city Department of Public Works committee. The park lost dozens of trees in recent years to emerald ash borer infestations.
The trio of saplings, each with little cages around their bases, is just a few feet from the Point's main parking lot. No one seems to know who planted them.
While rogue tree plantings may seem low on the list of Dunkirk's troubles, it's no laughing matter to city officials, who only want DPW workers and approved volunteers doing work on city property.
"You can't be having that," said Councilwoman and Committee Chair Nancy Nichols.
DPW is planning a pilot program in Wright Park to grow trees. If successful, it will plant more at the Point. DPW Director Randy Woodbury offered assurances the program is moving ahead.
It's planned to feature inscribed tablets at ground level so people can memorialize loved ones with individual trees.
A few new trees are already up at Point Gratiot, judging by a recent drive around the park.
Although not properly planted in their view, DPW officials seemed reluctant to remove the Point's scofflaw trees.
"Some of the Fourth of July parties might take care of that for you," Woodbury cracked.
