A 9-year-old with Dunkirk family connections has published a novel, "The Potato Who JUST Wanted A Friend."

Kayleigh Arcarese lives in Rochester but her mom, Kelly, is a Dunkirk native and Kayleigh's grandparents, Ron and Jan Budniewski, and extended family still live there.

The book is available in South Dayton's library. Kelly Arcarese said the Dunkirk library will get a copy once her daughter can sign it and they return to town to deliver it.

According to a Rochester-area media outlet, Westside News, the book stemmed from a third-grade writing assignment.

"Kayleigh worked diligently to create hand drawn pictures about this potato's journey in making friends at his new school," the article stated. "She then typed out her story to be like a book, included her drawings, printed the pages out, then stapled it and showed it to her parents."

That led to her parents successfully researching how to get the book published. It was released Aug. 15. The book is available on Amazon and will soon be available through Barnes and Noble.

Kayleigh's accomplishment has led to several profile pieces on Rochester-area TV stations. "I feel like a celebrity and it's been really cool," she told Westside News.
