SILVER CREEK — A meaningful walk through the streets of Silver Creek will take place again this fall.

At a recent meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 6472 was granted permission to hold its annual Walk 22 event on Oct. 14 at 9 a.m., beginning at the VFW Post.

The Walk 22, set for its third year in the Village of Silver Creek, is an event through the village to support military veteran suicide prevention and awareness. The registration cost for the event will benefit suicide prevention and awareness for veterans.

The Walk 22 is organized by Auxiliary Post 6472 President Deanna Borrello. The wife of a veteran, Borrello recognizes the significance of the event.

“These veterans marched for us so we have the freedoms we have. So we’re asking anyone and everyone to come out if they can to show that we support them,” Borrello told the OBSERVER.

The month of October is highlighted by the VFW overseers at the state level as a time to raise awareness for the issue of veteran suicide. According to states reporting veteran suicide rates, 22 veterans are lost to suicide each day. That figure is represented in the 22-minute walk.

Last year’s route went down Main Street to Ward Avenue, onto Parkway Street, then down to Rix Place and Oliver Place, and finally to the Village Ballpark. The walk will “expand a little more this year,” according to Borrello, with an extended walk down Main Street in the village. The Village Board unanimously approved the VFW’s request to hold the event at its most recent meeting.

“We truly appreciate the support that we’ve had from our Village Board in the past,” Borrello said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
